Creating Space to Grow: Girls Bedroom Makeover

We are slowly making the spaces in our home our own. It has been a process, like any move to adjust and to start life in a new space. But here we are balancing the past, my childhood memories in this space while creating a future here for our family.

The Girl’s room was the first project we tackled to really make theirs. I think it’s fitting that it is the first room in our house we tackled cause it was my Mom’s sewing room. This space was the place where my mom poured over her creative outlet, quilting. She quilted for everyone. Anyone who knew her probably has a quilt of her’s somewhere in their house. I remember sunny winter days with a hot cup of tea sitting with my Mom sewing in this room. I was usually doing the talking and she would be cutting fabric, laying out patterns and busily sewing her creations into life.

This room was perfect for the girls. I knew right away that we would move our two girls into this space. It has the perfect bones; a beautiful bright bay window with window seat, open shelving and high ceilings. As soon as the girls moved in they slowly started working away at peeling the wallpaper. It was so exciting for them to get to work and officially get the wallpaper off. The closet doors had been removed from before cause my Mom had used it for for displaying all the fabric. Not exactly practical for two girls to keep clean and organized, so I was anxious to get some doors back on it. There were still lots of reminders of my childhood home in this space. The wall behind the door still had all our measurements from when we were kids. These little things are precious to me but not so much for girls. So we took lots of pictures and N even saved some pieces of wallpaper for her memory box:)

I want my kids to remember this process.

To remove the wallpaper we used a scoring tool from Home Depot and wallpaper remover. We were lucky that it came off relatively easy. It took a while but everyone had fun doing it. Paul was in it until the end and did the tedious work of peeling the last bits and washing and rinsing and washing the walls again. Once the walls were clean it was time for paint!

I really wanted to paint the room a soft pink. This was the first time that we have had the two girls in a room together and a room that we could decorate as a "girl’s” room. N right away loved the idea of pink and wanted to go bright. A slowly bought into the idea of pink and she wanted to go bold too. So we settled the choice by giving them a couple options to choose from. They picked Peppermint Stick. It’s a lot of pink:) And the girls love it.

There is so much in this room that has been “rehomed.” We purchased the mirror, lights, and a few pillows. Everything else was gifted or found in other spaces in our house. The basket for toys was my toy basket as a kid, and the Peony artwork, is by a local artist that we received as a wedding shower gift. The macrame weaving we just had made by Deanna from Wildflower Esthetics in Lumsden. The chair and desk were my Mom’s and the beds we had from the kids old bedrooms.

I love how this room has come together. I love how we have incorporated some old and new and a little bit of style from both the girls. The girls love the space. For me it was much more than putting paint on the walls. The process of making this house our home one room at a time has been therapeutic in ways I didn’t even realize I needed.

I know my Mom would love this space and the girls are going to enjoy this space for many years!

What do you think?!
